Astral Acoustics
Sunday, 9 February 2014
Astral Acoustics was recorded in more of a traditional sense using microphones and a couple of pre amps. There is a lot of hardware processing on this sample pack but the digital element is just as important, especially when editing and re sampling the recorded material.
My favourite combination for this type of work was the large diaphragm condenser microphone the Rode NT 1000 and the Joe Meek vc3 Channel strip.
The Joe Meek unit is superb for recording acoustic guitars and vocals and i like the large diaphragm condensers for recording acoustics
Getting the source recordings right means that the samples will be of optimum quality and there will be no undesirable artefacts when it comes to the more extreme processing techniques used in creating the abstract acoustic samples.
Here are some more pictures from the loft space i call a studio.
the full studio
The Akai APC 20 and Novation Nocturn
the controllers are great for processing sounds on the fly.I audition and test all of my samples in Ableton and also test how they work with other sample libraries out on the market.

The Den part 2
This post contains some more visuals of the papas st germain working environment. As you can see there is a fair amount of chaos and cable everywhere which is one of the downsides to using analogue hardware.I still think it's worth it though. My favourite part of the studio is the Akai samplers and line 6 echo unit. This is where i do a lot of processing and sampling then re sampling.Always prefer to look at these samplers as being empty vessels waiting to be filled with any sound possible.I play them almost like an instrument and get so many happy accidents working this way.Checked an interview recently at BoC pages and Boards of Canada still use them from time to time.Built like tanks and so reliable.

This the link to the blog at BoC pages where lots of other artists ask BoC questions. The paragraph below shows the answer to the Jon Hopkins question.
JON HOPKINS
Is there an instrument that has always given you inspiration and what is your relationship with it?
MS : Good question. Probably the Akai sampler. I keep going back to my old Akai. We use them more like synthesizers than samplers we record our own instrumental parts on it and then manipulate them. It’s not really an instrument in the sense that it doesn’t have it’s own sound, it's just a tool. I love the old stuff, the memories they hold and the efforts of memory they require. Also, they look like stuff in Soviet hospitals, which encourages us to do depressing music.
Below are some of the analogue pedals i use to process some of the samples from the Akai samplers back into my DAW (usually Pro Tools)
I love the Electro harmonix stuff it's musical, noisy and extreme everything sound design should be.I use the Vari wah as a filter rather than a conventional wah pedal and the big muff adds grit to any signal, a true classic. That's all for now folks more posts coming this week in the lead up to releasing Astral Acoustics sample pack on Feb 7th at sampleism.com. Peace papas st germain
